Breaking the Stigma

Mental health conditions are as real as physical illnesses. Anxiety and depression together affect more than 615 million people worldwide, yet stigma, lack of awareness, and limited access to care prevent millions from seeking help.

Anxiety Disorders

Anxiety is more than feeling nervous. Anxiety disorders involve persistent, excessive worry that interferes with daily activities. Symptoms include restlessness, a racing heart, difficulty concentrating, irritability, muscle tension, and sleep disturbance.

Depression

Depression is characterised by persistent sadness, loss of interest in activities once enjoyed, changes in appetite or sleep, fatigue, feelings of worthlessness, and in severe cases, thoughts of self-harm. It is not a sign of weakness — it is a medical condition.

When to Seek Help

  • When symptoms last more than two weeks
  • When daily functioning is affected
  • When you experience thoughts of harm

Treatment Options

  • Talking therapies (CBT, counselling)
  • Medication (antidepressants, anti-anxiety medications)
  • Lifestyle approaches (exercise, sleep hygiene, social connection)
  • Mindfulness and stress reduction techniques

If you or someone you know is in crisis, reach out to a mental health helpline or emergency services immediately.
