What Is Type 2 Diabetes?
Type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition in which the body either doesn't produce enough insulin or doesn't use insulin effectively, leading to elevated blood sugar (glucose) levels.
Risk Factors
- Being overweight or obese
- Physical inactivity
- Family history of diabetes
- Age over 45
- Prediabetes or gestational diabetes
- Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
Symptoms
- Frequent urination
- Excessive thirst
- Blurred vision
- Slow-healing wounds
- Fatigue and irritability
- Numbness or tingling in hands and feet
Prevention
Studies show that losing even 5–7% of body weight and engaging in moderate exercise for 150 minutes per week can reduce the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes by up to 58% in high-risk individuals.
Management
Management typically includes blood sugar monitoring, dietary changes, physical activity, and medications such as metformin. In some cases, insulin therapy may be required.
